Most of us have heard of or know someone who has had Botox. But, are you familiar with Dysport and Xeomin? We are here to explain the differences of these three FDA approved botulinum toxins.
Botox(manufactured by Allergan) is made of botulinum toxin A. Botox was approved by the FDA in 2002. It is a protein, prepared from the bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum, which inhibits muscle activity by blocking transmission from the nerve to the muscle. This cosmetic procedure is FDA approved and can erase fine lines and wrinkles in your face. The treatments take about 10 minutes and are minimally invasive.
Dysport(manufactured by Medicis) is also comprised of botulinum toxin A. Dysport was approved in the US in 2009. The Dysport protein is smaller so it is reported to work a little faster than Botox. It also claims to give a more natural look to your face. Dysport targets the forehead and erases frown lines. It is injected into 5 points above your eyebrows and forehead. It lasts about 4-6 months.
Xeomin(manufactured by Merz) is also made of botulinum toxin A but was only approved by the FDA in the last 5 years. It is also used to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Xeomin has less additives than Botox & Dysport and does not have to be refrigerated. Xeomin is used to target frown lines and soften their appearance in patients.
